Having glass windows and doors may look elegant and sophisticated, but it does require you to clean it properly. A dirty glass door or window does not really look nice. Not only that, it is more obvious compared to the solid ones. For instance, a dirty hand can easily be imprinted on it. If you want to make your home look aesthetically appealing through the glass openings, you need to make sure you are responsible enough to clean it until it sparkles.
With your door and windows being the first thing that visitors will see, you want to make sure that you can give them the right first impression. This is why you need to make sure that your glass doors and windows are squeaky clean.
The good news is, it is not hard to make your glass windows and doors sparkle. You do not have to call a professional to do it for you. Here are the steps that you need to follow in order to have sparkling glass doors and windows.
Step 1: Get the materials
Everything that you need can be found at home – so no need to buy anything. You need white vinegar, distilled water, spray bottle, dusting brush/old toothbrush/cotton swabs, microfiber cloth, sponge, old newspapers, lint-free cloth, soft dusting cloth, and glass squeegee tool. Maybe the last one is a bit special but you only need to buy one and you can keep on using it after.
Step 2: Get rid of the dust
Start by removing the loose dust by wiping the glass with a microfiber cloth. Make sure you wipe the whole glass thoroughly. This should always be done before you spray any liquid solution on the surface.
Step 3: Wipe the frame and sill
Next is the door and window frame – and the sill too. You can use the dusting cloth to accomplish this task. Make sure you include the hinges, knobs, handles, etc. If you encounter any gunk buildup (usually around the corners and edges), use an old paintbrush/toothbrush/cotton swab to remove the dirt and debris.
Step 4: Protect the sill and frame
Before you work on the glass, cover the sill with old newspaper first. You can also use an absorbent cloth to help catch any drips that might result when you use the liquid solution that will clean the glass windows and doors. The drips might destroy or weaken the sill and frame – especially if it is made of wood.
Step 5: Mix the cleaning solution
While you have the option to use a glass cleaner, you can save money by using what you have at home. You simply have to mix equal amounts of distilled water and white vinegar. Put the liquid solution in a spray bottle. The great thing about this solution is it is eco-friendly and also very effective. It can sanitize, deodorize, and thoroughly clean any surface.
Step 6: Spray on the glass surface
Spray the cleaning solution on one area of the glass windows and doors. Use a soft sponge to rub the dirt before the liquid dries up. It is best to do this when the sun is not shining on the glass. Having the solution dry on the glass will leave streaks and residue. When you are using the sponge, you need to rub it in a circular motion to make the glass clean and shiny. You do not have to apply too much pressure because the solution should help soften the dirt so you can wipe it easily.
Step 7: Use the squeegee tool
To dry the glass thoroughly, use the squeegee tool. From the upper corner, gently draw the squeegee down in a straight stroke. Repeat this until you have dried the whole glass surface. To complete this, draw the squeegee horizontally at the bottom of the window or door.
Step 8: Wipe with a dry cloth
After the squeegee tool, use a dry cloth to wipe the whole surface. Wipe in one direction only to avoid streaks.
Step 9: Buff the surface.
You can use either a microfiber cloth or an old newspaper. Buff the glass surface to make it sparkle and shine. A crumpled newspaper is also great for removing moisture. Do not use paper towels because these will leave streaks.
Step 10: Wipe the edges
Do not forget to wipe the panes to make sure it is also dry. If there are marks that cannot be removed, use a damp cloth and then follow with a dry one.
Repeat these steps on the other side of the glass windows and doors to make sure everything is cleaned thoroughly.
